The 1858 Act gave the GMC the power to: - ask the Licensing Bodies for full information on their courses of study and examinations - send visitors to observe and report upon examinations - make representations to the Privy Council to de-recognise primary medical qualifications if the Council came to regard the foundations of the qualification of a Licensing Body as insufficient.

The GMC have issued a series of 'Recommendations' via the Education Committee for guidance of the Licensing Bodies. These include recommendations on:

  • General Clinical Training
  • Undergraduate Medical Education

The current Medical Act gives the Education Committee the general function of promoting high standards of medical education.
