The GMC was created by the Medical Act of 1858, with the initial title "The General Council of Medical Education and Registration of the United Kingdom." Its duty is to protect the public by promoting and maintaining high professional standards. The functions of the GMC include:

  • A Register of doctors: - who qualified in the United Kingdom and in other Member States of the EC - who are provisionally registered
  • Collection of an Annual Retention Fee
  • To guide the medical profession on standards of: - medical ethics - professional conduct.
  • A Disciplinary Function
  • To provide help for sick doctors
  • To promote high standard of medical education
