Anterior landmarks

The landmarks which can be palpated on the anterior aspect of the hip are:

  • anterior superior iliac spines
  • iliac crests
  • iliac tubercle
  • greater trochanter
  • pubic tubercle

This part of the examination is best carried out with the patient standing. Progressing to examination of the posterior part of the hip involves a change of position.
