Symptoms:

  • breathlessness
  • dependent on aetiology

Signs:

  • decreased chest wall movement on the affected side
  • mediastinum and trachea shifted to the affected side if the result of an absorption collapse
  • vocal fremitus is absent
  • percussion note is dull on the affected side
  • decreased breath sounds on the affected side
  • there are no added sounds
