Friction rub (pleural)
A pleural friction rub occurs when thickened, roughened pleural surfaces rub together as the lungs expand and contract.
On auscultation, a continuous or intermittent grating sound is heard.
Causes include:
- pulmonary infarction
- pneumonia
- rarely, a pleural malignancy or spontaneous pneumothorax
