Diazepam and chlordiazepoxide are the most commonly used preparations - there is little point in using others which appear to have very similar properties and are more costly, although some, for example temazepam and triazolam have a shorter duration of action and therefore are more appropriate as hypnotics.

Types available include:

  • chlordiazepexide
  • diazepam
  • oxazepam
  • nitrazepam
  • temazepam
