Adverse drug effects
Drugs and toxins which can cause autonomic failure include:
- hypotensive drugs:
- beta-blockers
- alpha-blockers
- centrally-acting hypotensives:
- clonidine
- methyl-dopa
- captopril
þ alcohol:
- direct neurotoxicity
- complications of thiamine deficiency (Wernicke's encephalopathy)
- antidepressants:
- tricyclics
- monoamine oxidase inhibitors
