Follow-up fitting diaphragm or cap

Authoring team

  • after attending fitting of the diaphragm (or cervical cap) the patient should be provided with a practice cervical cap or diaphragm and spermicide for one week

  • in this week, the woman should practice fitting the diaphragm or cervical cap themselves. Alternative contraception should be used during this week

  • at follow-up:
    • the clinician should enquire to whether the woman and her partner are satisfied with the use of the diaphragm or cap as their future means of contraception
    • check that the cervix is covered after the woman has fitted the diaphragm or cervical cap
    • make sure the woman is confident about checking whether the cervix has been covered by the diaphragm or cervical cap
