The HIV genome codes for several regulatory proteins, including:

  • tat:
    • accelerates the rate of viral transcription

  • rev:
    • rev regulates the balance of transcription of the regulatory proteins (tat & rev) versus the structural proteins (gag, pol & env)

  • nef:
    • causes downregulation of the expression of CD4 on the host cell surface

  • vpr, vpu & vif:
    • the roles of these proteins are not well characterised
