7. Narrative thread: encourages telling the story of the problem(s) from the beginning in the patient's own words

8. Question style: uses open-ended and closed questions and moves appropriately from one to the other.

9. Listening: listens attentively, allowing the patient to complete statements without interuption and leaving time to think before answering or to go on after pausing.

10. Facilitation: facilitates the patient's responses verbally and non-verbally using encouragement, silence, repetition, paraphrasing and interpretation.

11. Clarity: uses concise, easily understood questions and comments and avoids or adequately explains jargon.

12. Clarification: clarifies statements which are vague or need amplification ('What do you mean by lightheaded?').
