Urethral catheterisation is performed to enable assessment of urine output and renal perfusion. Prior to this, rectal examination should be performed.
Catheterisation is contraindicated if there are signs or urogenital trauma and pelvic fracture.
Suprapubic catheterisation may similarly be contraindicated as the bladder may no longer be in its normal anatomical position.
