Thermal haemostasis (endoscopic)

Haemostasis by thermal means has proved to be highly effective at stopping bleeding, particularly from peptic ulceration. The criteria for selecting lesions which are likely to require and respond to a thermal approach is also improving. For example, a 'visible vessel' on an ulcer base has a higher chance of rebleeding than an overlying clot at a given site.

Methods of thermal haemostasis include:

  • lasers
  • electrocoagulation
  • heater probes
