Comparing a VSD with an ASD:

  • heart size and pulmonary artery diameter are usually smaller in a VSD than an ASD
  • pulmonary plethora is a less prominent feature in a VSD compared to an ASD
  • if there is only a small shunt then there is some remaining upper/lower zone differential of vessels in a VSD; this is lost in an ASD
