  • tuberculosis of the genital tract is rare in the UK; it most commonly occurs amongst high-risk groups e.g. immigrants from Asia
  • tuberculosis spread is blood-borne and generally tuberculosis affects the fallopian tubes and then the endometrium
  • clinical features:
    • presentation is variable and possibilities include:
      • acute salpingitis
      • infertility
      • menstrual disorders e.g. oligomenorrhoea, amenorrhoea
      • pelvic pain
      • pyosalpinx
  • management includes:
    • exclusion of pulmonary TB
    • chemotherapy as for pulmonary tuberculosis
    • endometrial histology will needed to be repeated after a year
