The histological features of a hypertrophic scar change with the stage of wound healing that it has progressed to at the time of biopsy. However, there are usually inflammatory features and the collagen is often in a 'whorled arrangement' that is different from the discrete nodules that are frequently seen in the dermis with keloid scars.
