Alfacalcidol (or 1 alpha-hydroxycholecalciferol) is hydroxylated derivative of vitamin D. It may be prescribed in patients with severe renal impairment who require vitamin D therapy (vitamin D requires hydroxylation by the kidney to its most active form to have the most significant effect on calcium homestasis).
