  • the aim is to identify carrier couples at-risk of giving birth to a thalassaemic child and to offer prenatal diagnosis as soon as possible, preferably well within the first trimester. The couple can only make fully informed reproductive choices if the woman and her spouse are tested early. If both are carriers, with the agreement of the couple, they can be referred to prenatal diagnostic services
