This is two molecules of mesalazine that are joined by an azo bond.

Indications include:

  • patients who do not tolerate sulphasalazine
  • patient allergic to sulphonamides
  • men with inflammatory bowel disease who wish to start a family (sulphalazine causes reversible infertility)

Side effects:

  • diarrhoea:
    • may be avoided if the dose is gradually increased and the medication is taken with food
