Possible side effects:

  • nausea - occurs in approximately 1/3 of patients, particularly in the early stages of treatment

  • somnolence, dizziness, dry mouth and insomnia are relatively common

  • an increase in blood pressure was seen in clinical trials in patients treated with venlafaxine - this most often occurred with doses above 200 mg venlafaxine per day (1)

  • thrombocytopaenia - extremetly rare - has been described as a possible association by the UK Committee in Safety of Medicines - in the cases reviewed it is difficult to ascribe causality to treatment with venlafaxine with any certainty (1)
