Radiological changes in ankylosing spondylitis include:

  • erosion, sclerosis and ankylosis of the sacroiliac joints

  • syndesmophytes - bony bridges between neighbouring vertebrae - produce a 'bamboo spine' appearance

  • peripheral joints show erosive changes that resemble rheumatoid arthritis - subchondral erosions
