Internuclear ophthalmoplegia may be caused by:

  • multiple sclerosis
  • stroke e.g. basilar artery stroke
  • brain stem tumours
  • encephalitis
  • Wernicke's encephalopathy
  • meningovascular syphilis

A pseudo-internuclear ophthalmoplegia may be caused by myasthenia gravis.
