This section covers some of the treatment measures used in psychiatric illness. Treatments used in psychiatry are aimed at:

  • influencing the patient's mental state
  • assisting in the patient's rehabilitation and return to the community

Treatment measures that are available can be classified in three groups:

  • psychological e.g. psychotherapy, behaviour therapy
  • physical e.g. sedatives, tranquillisers
  • occupational e.g. occupational therapy, industrial therapy
