This condition, presenting with proteinuria often of nephrotic proportions, is more common in males.
It is characterized histologically by thickening of the capillary basement membrane secondary to the deposition of immune complexes.
In 90% of cases no cause is found.
Men are more commonly affected. About 33% of patients affected go into spontaneous remission over five years, but the remainder are likely to develop progressive renal failure; these proportions may vary in different parts of the world.
