Renal vein thrombosis may arise as a result of any hypercoagulable state; in adults it is most commonly caused by nephrotic syndrome, in children it is a rare response to a variety of insults.
There may be an associated thrombocytopaenia.
Prevention is with the use of prophylactic subcutaneous heparin.
