Chlormethiazole edisylate is a drug which is structurally related to thiamine (vitamin B1) but acts like a barbiturate i.e. is a sedative, hypnotic, muscle relaxant and anticonvulsant.
It is given in alcohol withdrawal and may be given in capsules daily by mouth (also available as 0.8% solution of i.v. infusion).
It is dangerous in overdose, and is mainly used in alcohol withdrawal and detoxifications where it should be titrated against symptoms. It potentiates drugs, especially barbiturates and alcohol where serious respiratory depression may occur.
It is widely abused especially by alcoholics and dependence may occur; it should only be used for inpatient treatment.
