Bronchoalveolar lavage provides samples from the lower respiratory tract for:

  • assessment of the inflammatory cell population
  • microbiology
  • cytology

Technique and indications are outlined below.

Possible complications include:

  • fever (transient)
  • hypoxia
  • rarely infection may occur
  • a transient CXR shadow may be seen
