The sympathetic nervous system travels down the spinal cord within the white matter which is slightly lateral to the lateral horn of the grey matter. Fibres originate in the hypothalamus. They terminate by synapsing with the cell bodies of pre-ganglionic neurones in the lateral horn area VII. This occurs in the relatively enlarged segments of T1 to L2.
