These tumours may arise in any of the parasympathetic paraganglia, and may be denoted by their anatomic location ie carotid body paraganglioma. Unlike tumours of the sympathetic system there is rarely any catecholamine hypersecretion.
Such tumours have also been noted to respond to chemical changes such as blood CO2 etc and have in the past been called chemodectomas.
