Nocturia is the term used to describe passing urine with abnormal frequency at night. It commonly accompanies urinary frequency or polyuria, but may be psychogenic or due to cardiac failure. In the latter, nocturia reflects increased renal perfusion at night as the peripheral oedema is returned to the heart whilst in the supine position.
