Paragangliomas are tumours arising from either the parasympathetic or sympathetic paraganglia.

They are rare and occur in both men and women between the ages of 30 and 60 years old. They usually occur singly but may be multiple and may be familial. 10% of these tumours are malignant.

Depending on the type of paraganglia from which the tumour arises ie sympathetic or parasympathetic, the tumour will have different clinical features.
