The patient usually has symptoms of general infection, for example, fever, chills, and muscle pain.

Symptoms of local infection commonly include:

  • perineal pain
  • evidence of bladder outflow obstruction from glandular swelling - particularly, urinary frequency and urgency

Occasionally, there may be:

  • haematuria
  • abscess, with pain on defaecation

On rectal examination, the prostate is tender and swollen. Prostatic massage may cause pus to be exuded from the urethra.
