Hallux valgus is classically a bilateral condition. It is more common in females and occurs most frequently in the sixth decade of life.
The deformity is the usual symptom.
If there is pain then it may be due to one of a variety of conditions:
There is usually good movement at the MTP joints.
If the patient's shoes are examined, there is often excessive wear under the first and second metatarsal head positions on the sole.
