The trachea develops from the primitive oesophagus within the floor of the pharynx. In the ventrolateral wall of the oesophagus, a distinct laryngotracheal groove develops. The internal edges of this groove move towards the midline and eventually fuse. This delineates the original tube into ventral trachea and caudal oesophagus.
