In scapulo-peroneal spinal muscular atrophy, first the lower limbs and then the upper limbs show weakness. Foot drop is most commonly the first sign. The condition is difficult to distinguish clinically from scapulo-peroneal muscular dystrophy but has a different electromyelogram and muscle biopsy.
