Neurosyphilis is a condition that at one time occurred in about 10% of patients infected with Treponema pallidum at 10 to 25 years after primary infection. This condition is now very rare because of penicillin therapy at the onset of primary infection.

The CNS is seeded during secondary syphilis.

Neurosyphilis may take the form of a variety of syndromes:

  • asymptomatic neurosyphilis
  • meningovascular syphilis
  • tabes dorsalis
  • general paralysis of the insane
