Dipyridamole

Dipyridamole is an anti-platelet drug which is indicated for:

  • prevention of thromboembolism in patients with prosthetic heart valves, in combination with oral anticoagulation
  • secondary prevention of stroke and TIA, either alone or in combination with aspirin

Dipyridamole mode of action:

  • a phosphodiesterase inhibitor - it acts to prevent the conversion of cyclic AMP to inactive 5' AMP
  • cyclic AMP has the action of inhibition of release of calcium from intracellular stores in the platelet (released during platelet activation and secretion)
