pathway originates in the organ of Corti, the cochlear, and the spiral ganglion
fibres travel in the auditory nerve to one dorsal and two ventral nuclei on each side
from these nuclei the fibres project through the lateral lemniscus - there is some decussation to the inferior colliculus and the medial geniculate body
the superior temporal gyrus is the final common pathway
