ADEM often follows an upper respiratory or gastrointestinal viral infection, viral exanthems - measles, rubella, chickenpox, etc. - or immunisation with viral vaccines - live or killed; influenza, rabies.
Most commonly, it follows measles - 1 per 1000 primary infections - or chickenpox - 1 per 2000 primary infections.
