The differential diagnosis involves:

  • vaginitis or vulvovaginal infections e.g. - Gardnerella, Candida albicans, Trichomonas, bacterial vaginosis – look for any vaginal discharge
  • sexually transmitted diseases - inquire about sexual activity and recent change of partner
  • urethral syndrome
  • interstitial cystitis
  • dysmenorrhoea (1)
