Breast reconstruction is undertaken by both specialist breast and plastic surgeons within the United Kingdom. The patient should be kept fully informed of all the potential disadvantages:

  • there is a theoretical risk that, where carried out after breast cancer, appreciation of recurrence may be delayed
  • the breast may appear similar to the original, but it will neither feel the same nor physically behave in the same way
  • multiple procedures may be required
  • the appearance rarely matches the quality of the contralateral breast or the original breast

Ideally, the patient should see pictures of reconstructed breasts or meet women who have had surgery.
