In about 30% of cases there is no clear abnormality found on endoscopy. In the remaining cases of heartburn with positive findings there are:

  • oesophagitis with no other pathology 24%
  • duodenal ulcer 17%
  • hiatus hernia 15%
  • gastritis 9%
  • duodenitis 6%
  • gastric ulcer 5%
  • reflux of bile 0.7%
  • gastric cancer 0.2%

In 23% of cases there were two or more different pathologies present.
