Preparation:

  • sit patient in an armchair with his head resting back
  • give Diazepam 5-10 mg, according to the size of the patient, orally or i.m. if the patient is not already relaxed by inebriation

Gag reflex method:

  • when adequately relaxed, the patient should open his mouth wide
  • produce a gag reflex by touching the patient's uvula with a throat swab
  • withdraw the swab - the gag reflex relocates the jaw
  • if the gag reflex method does not work, try the mandible grip method

If this fails, refer to hospital.
