Traditional therapy for ethylene glycol poisoning mirrors that for methanol poisoning:

  • ethanol:
    • 50 g orally or i.v., then
    • 10 g/hr by infusion

  • haemodialysis if the concentration of ethylene glycol exceeds 25 mg/ml

Intravenous 4-methyl pyrazole may be used instead of ethanol:

  • 9.5 mg/kg stat
  • 7.0 mg/kg at 12 hr
  • 3.6 mg/kg at 24 hr
  • 1.2 mg/kg at 36 hr
  • 0.6 mg/kg at 48 hr
