A double-J stent is used to dilate the ureter and allow stones that otherwise may have got stuck in the ureter, to pass. The stent is passed up the ureter through a cystoscope over a guide-wire. It is curved at both ends - hence, the name - so that it remains sited from the renal pelvis down into the bladder.
Placement should be confirmed by radiology of the kidneys, ureters and bladder. The stent may be left for 3-4 months at a time. It acts as a foreign body.
