Authoring team

  • don't go alone to suspected violent patients or put yourself in a vulnerable position - the police are willing to meet you there or at the surgery
  • make sure someone knows where you are and when you should be back
  • ensure adequate help and medication are immediately available
  • make sure you can get away rapidly and don't take chances
  • don't let the patient feel cornered
  • listen, talk calmly and do not argue with the patient
  • do not attempt to restrain the patient in any way unless you are well supported
  • if there are medical reasons to restrain the patient, proceed quickly and use the minimum of force
