The analgesic stepladder consists of:

  • non-opioid analgesics as the bottom rung:
    • aspirin
    • paracetamol
    • NSAIDS

  • weak-opioids +/- non-opioid:
    • codeine

  • strong-opioid +/- non-opioid:
    • morphine
