The most commonly injured joints are the knees, shoulder, elbows and ankle; less commonly the hip and wrist are injured, and rarely the joints of the spine and hand are damaged.

Joint injuries can be classified on the basis of violence of the accident, itself a predictor of the type of derangement caused.

Least violent : soft tissue damage - sprain : internal damage - meniscal tear - loose body - ligamentous damage : instability - subluxation - dislocation Most violent : fracture
