Incidence - the leading cause of morbidity in the Western world, accounting for more than half of all deaths.

Prevalence - nearly all adults, with a variable pattern and severity. Increases with age; more common in males than in females, particularly in younger age groups - aged 35 to 44 the prevalence in males is six times that of females, compared to just two times in 65 to 74 year olds.
