Glycosuria is classically associated with diabetes mellitus. Other causes of glycosuria include:

  • impaired glucose tolerance in thyrotoxicosis, acromegaly, and after gastrectomy
  • raised blood sugar levels secondary to raised adrenaline levels e.g. in phaeochromocytoma, anxiety states, strenuous activity
  • gross cerebral injury or haemorrhage
  • severe infection, especially staphylococcal may cause impaired glucose tolerance and glycosuria
  • reduced renal threshold for glucose e.g. pregnancy
  • renal tubular problems, for example anything which may cause a Fanconi syndrome
