Cerebral palsy is caused by a lesion that is permanent and non-progressive.

Possible causes of cerebral palsy include:

  • cerebral malformation. Up to 60% of cerebral palsy is due to early prenatal abnormality.
  • trauma - birth, postnatal
  • hypoxia
  • kernicterus
  • hypoglycaemia
  • infection
  • cerebrovascular accident
  • poisoning
  • toxins
  • HIV infection
